How We Began

Armed Missouri was founded in 2004 by father and son team Wally and Nic Shoffner.  Chris Shoffner joined after his NRA certification in 2008 and we officially incorporated in early 2009.  We are a family owned and operated firearms training team.  Our goal is to provide the highest standard of firearms training possible at an affordable price.

At Armed Missouri, Inc., we firmly believe in the fundamental right to keep and bear arms that is codified and protected in the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution.  We also believe in being involved in the legislative process and in helping to make sure this protection remains strong.  All of our instructors are life members of the NRA (National Rifle Association) and Armed Missouri, Inc. is an affiliate in good standing of the MSSA (Missouri Sport Shooting Association), which is Missouri’s Official NRA State Affiliate Organization.  We believe that by strengthening these fine organizations, we also strengthen the future for the individual right to bear arms.

About Our Instructors

Wally Shoffner was born in 1950 and became an avid handgun shooter early in his life.  A former reserve police officer, he became a Missouri State Certified Firearms Safety Instructor in 1993.  He was certified in 1995 by the NRA in the Basic Pistol and Personal Protection in the Home disciplines and has been actively teaching Missouri concealed carry courses since February 2004, placing him among the most veteran Missouri concealed carry instructors in the state.  Wally obtained the rating of NRA Personal Protection Outside the Home Instructor and NRA Certified Range Safety Officer in 2009, in addition to receiving an appointment as an NRA Certified Training Counselor and Chief Range Safety Officer in 2010.  Over the past 17 years, Wally has successfully provided instruction to hundreds of students ranging from novice to advanced, and has logged hundreds of hours of teaching time.

By the young age of 21, Nic Shoffner had begun teaching as a Missouri state certified firearms instructor with Wally as well as other firearms safety instructors in the St. Louis area.  Over the next six years, Nic continued to teach developing a true passion for firearms instruction.  When the opportunity presented itself in 2007, Nic obtained the rating of NRA Basic Pistol Instructor and has since gone on to obtain the ratings of Personal Protection In the Home Instructor, and Personal Protection Outside the Home Instructor as well as Range Safety Officer.  In 2010, Nic successfully completed an NRA Training Counselor Workshop receiving a recommendation and subsequently an appointment as an NRA Training Counselor and Chief Range Safety Officer.  In addition to class and range instruction, Nic also runs and maintains our website and internet-based communications.

After receiving his NRA Pistol Instructor Certification in 2008, Chris Shoffner joined Armed Missouri, Inc. late in the year.  Chris developed a keen interest in personal protection and the application of defensive pistolcraft skills in the late 1980’s after discovering the writings and techniques of defensive handgunnery experts, Chuck Taylor and Massad Ayoob.  Chris spends many hours and expends several thousand rounds of pistol ammunition at the range in training each year.  Utilizing the power of the Internet, he has developed on-line relationships with several of the best-known self-defense trainers in the country, allowing him to stay up-to-date with the most current information and training protocols in the industry.  In 2009, he completed the nearly 60 hours of intensive training required to obtain the NRA Personal Protection In The Home Instructor rating, the NRA Personal Protection Outside The Home Instructor rating, as well as the NRA Range Safety Officer rating.  Consistent with his belief that one of the best ways to learn and solidify knowledge is by teaching, it is his goal to help students learn and develop the skills needed to become safe, confident, and proficient in their use of handguns and tactics as they apply to personal protection and the responsible ownership of firearms.

What Sets Us Apart

With three instructors and small class sizes (usually less than ten students), each student gets the personal attention they deserve.  In addition, each of our instructors has had extensive firearms training and is involved with continuing training in an ongoing basis.  While this training requires a lot of additional time and money, it is our goal to provide you with the best possible learning experience and the most accurate, up-to-date information.  We have consulted and continue to consult with defense attorneys, prosecuting attorneys, Law Enforcement Officers, and others knowledgeable in Missouri firearms laws to insure the information we provide you is accurate, complete, and current.

Where We Stand

We understand that choosing an instructor and a firearms training course is a serious matter.  Likewise, we also understand that there are a lot of different instructors and courses out there to choose from.  It can be hard, and sometimes overwhelming, to sort through all of the different options.  There are some instructors out there who may try to lead you to believe that only a combat-hardened, 20-year Spec-Ops veteran can provide proper training to the armed citizen, while there are others that may be cutting corners on training in order to maximize their profit at your expense.  In reality, the training that the armed citizen requires can be significantly different than the kind of training military or law enforcement personnel will need.  Spending a weekend in boot camp will likely do little good for the armed citizen interested in the very real business of protecting themselves and their families on the street and in the home.  While it may be fun or exciting to learn how to shoot a machine gun or how to perform a dynamic entry into a barricaded building, those types of skills simply have very little practical application in the real-world civilian environment that the armed citizen lives and conducts business in each day, and spending valuable training time learning skills you will never use and never be able to practice is a waste of your time and money.

At Armed Missouri, Inc., we operate within the confines of reality and we understand that there is no such thing as perfection when it comes to a training course, regardless of the instructor or facility that provides the training.  We realize that your training time and resources are not unlimited, and since we understand that no course of instruction can ever cover every possibility, we remain focused on teaching proven concepts and curriculum that stay grounded in the tactical and legal realities the armed citizen is most likely to face in their daily lives.  We are proud of the way we conduct our classes and the way we conduct ourselves as instructors.  We believe in trying to keep quality firearms training affordable and accessible to every law-abiding citizen who desires it.  What we don’t believe in is trying to lure students in with hype and gimmicks or pricing our training courses out of the reach of the average person, nor will we ever use our training classes as a platform to try to sell you books, videos, firearms, or other merchandise on time you have paid for.

Our Guarantee

At Armed Missouri, Inc., your safety and satisfaction are our number one priority.  We firmly believe that our classes are among the highest in quality as well as the lowest in price anywhere in our region of the country.  We will gladly provide references to any prospective student who requests them.  We will continue to ensure that our instructors are actively involved in ongoing training for themselves so they can provide the most complete and most up-to-date instruction to you.  We will strive to always act in a professional manner and to always treat you like a respectful human being rather than like cattle that are being herded through the classroom.  If, after the completion of any training course you take with us, you are not satisfied with the instruction you received, we will gladly refund your money (less the cost of any course materials you have used or kept, and less the issuance of any course completion certificates).

FAQ's about Armed Missouri, Inc.

For FAQ's about an individual course, visit the page for the course you are interested in.

Q.

How long have you been involved in firearms training?

A.

Armed Missouri began in 2004 after Missouri passed its concealed carry law but our firearms instruction experience goes back to 1993 when Wally was certified as Missouri state firearms safety instructor.  Combined, we offer nearly 30 years of firearms training experience.

Q.

Where are you located?

A.

We hold our classes on our property located just outside Mt. Sterling, Missouri in Gasconade County.

Q.

Why do you hold your classes so far away from a city?

A.

In order to keep our classes as inexpensive as possible, we use a facility we already own.  This enables us to keep our prices low while giving our students a high-quality learning experience.  This also ensures that the entire range will be dedicated to our students rather than sharing a rented or public range with others.  Furthermore, by using our own range, we are able to offer students reality-based shooting/training scenarios that are impossible on rented or public ranges.  Finally, by using our own range, we are able to offer students a one-day Missouri CCW class rather than requiring the student to give up two weekends to schedule around the use of an off-site range, saving you both time and money.

Q.

Can you do a class at another location.

A.

Yes, however we will still require any range session to be held at our range facility.  In addition, we have specific policies regarding off-site classes.  If you would like more information, please contact us.

Q.

Can you arrange a week-day, day-time Missouri Concealed Carry class?

A.

Yes, provided that we have enough advance notice, we can arrange a week-day, day-time class.  We would generally require a minimum of 4 students and some special policies may apply.  Please contact us for details.

Q. Are one-on-one classes available?
A. Yes.  Most of our classes are available as a one-on-one class.  There will be an additional charge for any one-on-one class.

Q.

What is it that makes a NRA sanctioned course stand apart from others?

A.

While there are surely some very good training courses available out there, there is no disputing the proven track record of NRA sanctioned training courses taught by NRA Certified Instructors.  With an NRA sanctioned training course, you are assured of getting proven curriculum, proven training methods, and proven success.  At the end of the day, NRA training courses train more police officers and armed citizens in the proper use of firearms than any other program(s) in the country; a track record that no other entity can claim.

Q.

If I sign up for more than one class, can I get a discount?

A.

Armed Missouri Inc is happy to offer a discounted rate for those who sign up and pay in advance for multiple classes.  Please contact us for details if you're interested in this offer.

Q.

How can I pay for my course?

A.

Armed Missouri, Inc. is happy to accept personal checks, money orders, cashiers checks, and of course, cash.  We can also accept online credit card payments through PayPal.com.  An account is not required and there is no additional fee for online payment.  Please visit our Payments page for more details.
